The Conservation Law Center is an organization dedicated to provide support in the area of conservation of biodiversity in Chile and other countries of South America
The Conservation Law Center brings together the first academic researchers and legal practitioners of conservation law in Chile dedicated, among others, to the research of legal structures for the conservation of biodiversity, since 1994, and members of the Global Environmental Law Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The main research activities of the Center are related to the way of structuring links among the public and private conservation and the efforts of diverse social sectors and organizations.
In 2003, our Center proposed a new institution of continental private law, which was denominated the ´conservation property right´ or ´derecho real de conservación´, and later in the corresponding legislative process the Center contributed the definitive drafting of the main articles of Law No20.930 enacted in 2016
One of the goals of the Center is to promote the correct understanding of this institution avoiding, on one hand, implementations which contradict its theorical and practical bases, and on the other, avoiding assimilations to other institutions of compared law of a different nature.
All this is carried out in the context of academic research that covers and includes: Philosophy and Legal Theory, Social Theory, Political Theory, Private and Public Law.
However, the work of the Center also extends to practical advice to organizations of a diverse nature, including among others the Chilean Environmental Authority in Chile, the National Forestry Commission (the National Conservation Agency – CONAF), Fundación Kennedy, Fundación Buenas Raíces, Fundación Llampangui, Fundación AMA, Sociedad Agrícola El Tangue and several conservation organizations.
The Center has been founded upon the conviction that the right understanding and implementation of legal strategies can make the difference as to their social, environmental and economic sustainability.
Our Center provides advice to diverse organizations for the implementation of the ´conservation right´, not only with respect to traditional conservation projects but also with respect to initiatives for the conservation of biodiversity or ecosystems that are related to other economic activities, including productive ones.

Our director, Dr. Jaime Ubilla, who proposed the real conservation right and drafted the main articles of Law 20,930, together with President Michelle Bachelet, on the day of the promulgation of this law, on June 10, 2016 in Valdivia Chile .
